Mericia Brown, IHM

Sister M. Mericia Brown, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Tuesday, April 7, 1981 at St. Rose Convent in Carbondale, PA, of an apparent heart attack.

She was born on February 23, 1909 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Alice. She was daughter of the late Thomas Francis and Catherine Mahady Brown. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 2, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.

Sister Mericia taught junior high school subjects at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; and St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as at IHM schools in Pittsburgh and Lock Haven, PA.

From 1978 until the time of her death, Sister Mericia served as a prayer minister at St. Rose Convent in Carbondale.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, John Cornelius, Thomas Francis Jr., Carl S., William Henry and Jerome Wilson; and three sisters, Mary, Margaret Smith and Frances Loretta McCann.

She is survived by a sister, Kathleen Feeney of Scranton, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday April 9 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Wednesday evening.
