Sister M. Mercedes Flanagan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, March 27, 1972, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on August 1, 1904 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Florence. She was the daughter of the late Patrick James and Mary Elizabeth Furey Flanagan. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1923, received the religious habit on August 15, 1923, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1925.
Sister Mercedes served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1925 to 1926; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1926 to 1927 and 1942 to 1945; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1927 to 1932; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1932 to 1938; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1938 to 1942; St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY from 1945 to 1953; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY, from 1953 to 1962; and St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1962 to 1968.
From 1968 until the time of her death, Sister Mercedes served as a prayer minister at St. Ephrem Convent in Brooklyn, NY, and later the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward Paul, Hubert John, Joseph Francis and Thomas.
She is survived by a brother, Albert, two sisters, Rose Ann Loftus and Mary Devlin, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, March 29 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday at the Marian Convent.
