Sister Marietta Smith, IHM

Sister Marietta Smith, IHM, (formerly known as Sister Mary Marietta) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, April 5, 1972, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on February 8, 1891, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Agnes Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Walsh Smith. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1912, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Marietta served as a music teacher in the following schools: St. John School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Leo School in Ashley, PA; St. Basil Schoolin Dushore, PA; Immaculate Conception School in Lock Haven, PA; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Alphonsus School in New York, NY; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA; St. Cecilia in Elementary School Exeter, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA; St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA; St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA; St. Ambrose School in Bridgeport, CT; Sacred Heart School in La Plata, MD; and St. Peter of Alcantara School in Port Washington, NY.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas, James, John Jr., Michael and William, and a sister, Mary Ignatus Smith.

She is survived by a sister, Bridget (Bessie) Delmar, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Thursday and Friday at the Marian Convent.
