Sister M. Marcellus Kirsch, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, January 21, 1993, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was born on October 3, 1917 in Nicktown, PA, and given the name Gertrude. She was the daughter of the late Philip and Anna Dalton Kirsch. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1941, received the religious habit on August 2, 1941, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1943.
Sister Marcellus was a primary and intermediate grade teacher, she served in the following schools: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA; and St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA. She also taught at elementary schools located in Maryland, New York, and Rhode Island.
From 1989 until the time of her death, Sister Marcellus served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Matthew, Regis, Marcellus (Mark) and Robert.
She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Camilla, IHM, of Scranton, PA, and Emma Jean Morin of Pittsburgh, PA, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday, January 25 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call Sunday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.

Sister Marcellus always had a warm smile, and a gracious, gentle manner as she welcomed everyone into her heart. She had a tender love for all of God’s children. Her ministry of teaching radiated the love, care and compassion of Christ.
