Sister M. Macaria Mooney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, July 21, 1979, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on January 6, 1900 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late William R. and Catherine Gibbons Mooney. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1926, received the religious habit on August 15, 1926, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1928.

Sister Macaria served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Ashville, PA; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI. She also taught at elementary schools located in Baltimore, MD; Pittsburgh, PA; and Brooklyn and Forest Hills, NY.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Jr., Leo Francis and Joseph John, and a sister, Sister M. Christopher Mooney, IHM.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Smith of Queens Village, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, July 24, at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday afternoon or evening.
