Sister M. Linus Hannon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, May 29, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on November 22, 1879 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Elizabeth Genevieve. She was the daughter of the late James A. and Ellen Cawley Hannon. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1906, received the religious habit on July 26, 1906, and made profession of her vows on July 16, 1908.
Sister Linus served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1933 until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Theresa (Tessie), Anna, and Sister M. Nativite, IHM.
She is survived by three sisters, Mary Reardon of Brooklyn, NY, and Agnes Meyer and Laura Lamb, both of New York City, NY; four brothers, Joseph T., Henry, and James A. Jr., all of Scranton, PA, and William Francis of Belleville, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, May 31 at 10:30 a.m at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, PA. Interment will follow at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Pittston. Friends may call on Friday after 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Convent in Pittston.
Archival Remembrance:
During the great part of the 33 years in which she was a member of the Immaculate Heart Order, Sister Mary Linus was located at St. John’s Convent in Pittston and her death has occasioned sorrow among the hundreds of men and women of that city whom she taught in St. John’s Parochial School and whose friendship and respect she earned. About a quarter of a century ago, she taught in the eighth grade of St. John’s School and for eight years prior to her death was a teacher in St. John’s High School. Sister Mary Linus, died on May 29, 1941 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Carbondale, where she had been under medical treatment for 10 days.
