Sister M. Leon McConnell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, September 26, 1996, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She as born on April 14, 1920 in Altoona, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes Grimme McConnell. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1940, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1944.

Sister Leon served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Cecelia Elementary School in Wyoming, PA, from 1963 to 1964; St. Michael Industrial School in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1973 to 1974; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1977 to 1978; Monsignor McHugh Elementary School in Cresco, PA, from 1987 to 1988; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; Sacred Heart Elementary School in La Plata, MD; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD; Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mt. Holly, NJ; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; and St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA; and St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT. She also taught at schools in the located in Pittsburgh, PA, Baltimore, MD, Washington, NC.

From 1995 until the time of her death, Sister Leon served as an instructor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Bailey and Genevieve Lightner, and a brother, Reverend Edward.

She is survived by a sister, Marie Kepping of Harrisburg, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, October 2, at 10:30 am with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. at the IHM Center.
