Sister M. Benedictus Philpott, IHM

January 31, 1901 – October 7, 1996

Sister M. Benedictus Philpott, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, October 7, 1996 at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 31, 1901 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Anna. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Thomas Philpott. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1920, made temporary profession of her vows on December 28, 1922 and final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister Benedictus was an accomplished musician and served on the faculty of the music department at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1929 to 1954.

Sister Benedictus served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. Joseph School in Danville, PA; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Schoolin Forest Hills, NY; as well as schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, Baltimore, MD, New York City and Manhasset, NY.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor and music teacher at: St. Ignatius Catechetical Center in Kingston, PA, from 1954 to 1960; and Holy Name of Mary Catechetical Center in Montrose, PA, from 1962 to 1968.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Benedictushas served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from Marywood College, and Master of Arts degree in music education from Columbia University. She also studied at the Julliard School of Music.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Robert J. and Attorney James T., and three sisters, Kay Donohue, Helen Carr and Mary Virginia O’Neill.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Hoffmann of Pittsburgh, PA, and Alice Wells of Ponte Vedra, FL, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, February 11 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Thursday at the Marian Convent after 2:00 p.m.
