Sister Mary Leo Hawley, IHM

Sister Mary Leo Hawley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, March 21, 1876, at St. John’s Convent in Pittston, PA, after a brief illness

She was born in 1858 in Silver Lake, PA, and given the name Hannah (Anna). She was the daughter of Edward and Mary Lannan Hawley. She entered the IHM Congregation on April 26, 1874, received the religious habit on August 14, 1874, and made profession of her vows on March 21, 1876.

Sister Mary Leo served as a teacher at St. John the Evangelist Academy in Pittston, PA.

The funeral will be Thursday, March 23 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, followed by interment at St. John the Evanglist Cemetery, Pittston.


“DIED – at the Academy of the Immaculate Heart, in this place on Tuesday morning the 21st of March, 1876, Sister M. Leo Hawley, aged 21 years.

The family name of the deceased was Hannah Hawley. She entered the order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary three years ago, and had resided in Pittston about a year, teaching mathematics in the Academy. Previous to assuming the vows of a religious she resided in Silver Lake, Susquehanna County, where her family still lives. About six weeks ago she was taken sick with erysipelas, and being of frail constitution, continued to decline until death loosed the silver cord. The funeral yesterday morning was largely attended. A high mass was celebrated in Saint John’s church and the body was interred in the parish cemetery.”
