Sister M. Kieran Helring, IHM
September 21, 1906 – November 23, 1993

Sister M. Kieran Helring, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, November 23, 1993, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on September 21, 1906 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Anna Gill Helring. She entered into the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1922, made temporary profession of her vows on December 29, 1924, and made final profession of her vows on December 8, 1931.
Sister Kieran served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1925 to 1928; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1928 to 1935 and 1941 to 1943; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1935 to 1938; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1938 to 1941; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1943 to 1947; St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE, from 1947 to 1951; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1955 to 1962; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1962 to 1965; St. Rita Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1965 to 1973; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1973 to 1976; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD, from 1976 to 1978; and St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY, from 1978 to 1980.
Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1943 to 1947; St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE, from 1947 to 1951; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY, from 1951 to 1955; and Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1962 to 1965.
Sister Kieran also served as receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1980 to 1993.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph G. (infant), Nicholas Joseph III, Frank M., and Bernard Paul; and three sisters, Kathryn Herbert, Alice Helring and Miriam Nabors.
She is survived by a sister, Ann M. Corea of Arlington, VA, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, November 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call Friday between 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the IHM Center.
