Sister M. Johanna Carden, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, August 12, 1954, while visiting at St. Mary Help of Christians Convent in Pittston, PA.

She was born on August 17, 1887 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Genevieve. She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Mary Feeney Carden. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1912, received the religious habit on August 2, 1913, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Johanna served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA; St. Alphonsus School in New York City, NY; Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, NY; and St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA, for twenty-five years.

From 1948 until the time of her death, Sister Johnanna served as a teacher at St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Thomas, John James, Michael, Frank, Martin, Matthew Jr., and James; and three sisters, Mary Burke, Bridget Carden and Anna McDonald.

She is survived by a sister, Loretta Carden of Pittston, PA; and several nieces and nephews, including, Sister Mary Francis, RSM, stationed at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Joseph McDonald of Inkerman, PA, and Robert and James Carden, both of Pittston, PA.

The funeral will be on Saturday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church in Pittston, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Friday at St. Mary Help of Christians Convent in Pittston.
