Sister M. Isabel Sternbergh, IHM

Sister M. Isabel Sternbergh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, March 7, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on January 24, 1868, in Schoharie, NY, and given the name Mary Isabel (May Bell). She was the daughter of the late Martin L. and Isabella Loucks Sternbergh. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 9, 1893, received the religious habit on May 24, 1894, and made profession of her vows on July 2, 1896.

Sister Isabel served as a teacher at the following schools: Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Scranton, PA; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; St. Joseph School in Danville, PA; St. Patrick School in Olyphant, PA; St. Lawrence School in Portland, OR; and the IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Jennie Kingsley.

he is survived by a nephew, Fredrick Sternbergh Couch.

The funeral will be Monday, March 10, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church, Moscow. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Note: Mother’s maiden name also could be spelled Leaucks or Leeaucks.
