Sister M. Imelda Sharpe, IHM

Sister M. Imelda Sharpe, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, May 21, 1980, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on March 17, 1901 in Pittston, PA and given the name Helen. She was daughter of the late William and Teresa McAndrew Sharpe. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1937, received the religious habit on August 2, 1937, and pronounced her vows on August 2, 1939.
Sister Imelda served as a math and science teacher in the followings schools: Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton; and Bishop O’Hara High School in Dunmore. She also taught at schools located in La Plata, MD, and Pittsburgh, PA.
Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Rose School in Carbondale; and St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA. She also served as assistant principal at Kingston Catholic High School in Kingston, PA.
At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister Imelda served as a department assistant in the Office of the Registrar, and as Advisor to International Students, from 1975 until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and John Bertrand (Bert).
She is survived by three sisters, Anne (Joseph) Boyce and Teresa Sharpe, both of Scranton, PA; Agnes Catherine (Joseph) Brennan of Clark’s Summit, PA; a brother, William of Scranton, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, May 24, at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Generalate. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday afternoon or evening.
