Sister M. Hildegarde Monahan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, August 2, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on July 19, 1919, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Dorothy. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Susan Collins Monahan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1939, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1942, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1945.

Sister Hildegarde served as a teacher of primary grades and music at the following schools: Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1942 to 1944 and 1946 to 1947; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1954 to 1957; St. Patrick Elementary School in Whitehaven, PA, from 1962 to 1963; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1963 to 1969; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green,PA, from 1969 to 1972; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1972 to 1978; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY; and St. Thomas School in Providence, RI; Sacred Heart Elementary School in LaPlata, MD. She also taught at elementary schools located in Washington, NC; and gave private music lessons at St. Thomas Aquinas Convent in Archbald, PA, from 1978 to 1983; and St. Patrick’s Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1983 to 1991.

Sister also served as a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1991 to 1993.

From 1993 until the time of her death, Sister Hildegarde was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Marywood College.

She is survived by cousins, including Eleanor Deviney of Clark’s Summit, PA.

The funeral will be Friday, August 6, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call Thursday between 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
