Sister M. Henrietta Higgins, IHM

July 1, 1857 – February 6, 1941

Sister M. Henrietta Higgins, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 6, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on July 1, 1857 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Mary Ann. She was the daughter of the late John and Ellen Rutledge Higgins. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 29, 1888, received the religious habit on December 27, 1888, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1891.

Sister Henrietta served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Altoona, PA; and St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, James and Thomas, and two sisters, Ellen Higgins and Elizabeth (Bessie) O’Rourke.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Delia Diskin Higgins of Wilkes-Barre, PA; four nephews, Robert, James and Charles Higgins; and two nieces, Agnes Fallon of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Mrs. James H. McDonald of Moosic, PA.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 8, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose’s Church in Carbondale, followed by interment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Greenfield Township, PA.
