Sister M. deRicci Daley, IHM

October 16, 1883 – May 3, 1941

Sister M. deRicci Daley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, May 3, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on October 15, 1883 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Mary Helen. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Holleran Daley. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 1, 1903, received the religious habit on August 2, 1904, and made profession of her vows on July 26, 1906.

Sister deRicci served as a teacher at St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA.

Sister served as principal and superior at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. John School in Susquehanna, PA; and St. Paul School in Scranton, PA. She also served as directress at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA.

In addition to her regular teaching duties, Sister deRicci was the first instructor selected to train teachers for religion classes conducted throughout the Scranton Roman Catholic Diocese for Catholic students attending public high schools. She was distinguished in all her religious duties for her patience, ability and Christ-like teachings and her many students revered her as their ideal teacher.

From 1931 until the time of her death, Sister deRicci served as a religion and education instructor at Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Anthony, John, Michael, Thomas, Martin and Joseph.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Walsh, of Pittston, PA; two brothers, Patrick Jr., of Pittston, PA, and William of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and two cousins, Sister M. Barbara Holleran, IHM, and Sister Mary George Holleran, IHM.

The funeral will be Monday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. in the Marywood College Chapel in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
