Sister M. Denis Donegan, IHM

June 4, 1896 – February 14, 1974

Sister M. Denis Donegan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 14, 1974, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on June 4, 1896 in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Elizabeth (Bessie). She was the daugther of the late Denis Peter and Bridget (Bride) Whalen Donegan, and step-daughter of the late Laura Hoppe Donegan. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 14, 1928, received the religious habit on April 1, 1929, and made profession of her vows on April 14, 1931.

Sister Denis served as a teacher at St. Rosalia School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1931 to 1934 and 1935 to 1936; and at St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA, from 1934 to 1935.

At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister served on the faculty teaching library science, English, and literature, from 1936 to 1970.

From 1970 until the time of her death, Sister Denis served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary (Mollie) Elizabeth Donegan, and Catherine Rutt, and a brother, Denis James, Jr.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Donegan-Ferguson of Del Ray Beach, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, February 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Saturday and Sunday.
