Sister M. Christine Clarkin, IHM

Sister M. Christine Clarkin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, April 7, 1982 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was a born on July 5, 1900 in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Hanifee Clarkin. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1918, received the religious habit on August 2, 1919, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1921.

As a business teacher, Sister Christine served at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; and St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA; as well as at schools located in Forest Hills, NY.

Sister Christine was the superior and/or administrator at the following: St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA; St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel School in Dunmore, PA; and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA. She also served as a part-time secretary in the school office at Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA.

From 1977 until the time of her death, Sister Christine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Mallard and Mary Clarkin, and two brothers, John Joseph and Thomas Francis, Sr.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Barlieb of Tobyhanna, PA, nieces and nephews.

Because of Holy Week, there will be a Blessing at the Marian Convent on Saturday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Saint Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday afternoon or evening.
