Sister M. Catherina Nelson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, December 4, 1941, at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA.
She was born on June 29, 1872 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Katherine O’Reilly Nelson. She entered the IHM Congregation on December 8, 1901, received the religious habit on April 1, 1902, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1904.
Sister Catherina served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Spokane, WA; St. John Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; and St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA.
Sister Catherina served as superior at St. Thomas Convent in Ashville, PA; and St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA.
She is survived by cousins, Dr. John J. Sullivan, Mrs. John Kelly, and Miss Evelyn Sullivan.
The funeral will be Saturday, December 6, with a Mass of Requiem at St. Patrick’s Church in Scranton, with interment to follow at Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton, PA.
