Sister M. Bridgid Stokes, IHM

Sister Mary Bridget Stokes, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 25, 1871, in Pittston, PA.

She was born in 1831, in Philadelphia, PA, and given the name Elizabeth. She entered the IHM Congregation in Reading, PA, on February 2, 1860, received the religious habit at St. Peter’s Church in Reading on August 8, 1860, and made professsion of her vows on August 22, 1861.

Sister Mary Bridget served as a teacher (as part of the first faculty) at St. John the Baptist School in Manayunk, PA, which opened in 1863. She also taught at St. John’s Academy in Pittston, PA.

Sister M. Bridget Stokes is the only known sister from the Immaculata IHM Congregation that is buried at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Pittston, PA.

Notes: Sister Bridgid’s first name is spelled Bridget by the Immaculata IHMs based in Malvern, PA. Our records show her first name also spelled as Mary Bridgid.
