Sister M. Anna Clare Johnson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died of an apparent heart attack on Monday, May 9, 1983, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on February 9, 1906 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Helen (Eleanor) Mary. She was the daughter of the late James and Anna Coyne Johnson. She entered the IHM Congregation on May 25, 1926, received the religious habit on August 15, 1926, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1928.

Sister Anna Clare served as a math and science teacher at the following schools: St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; St. Basil School in Dushore, PA; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA; St. Paul School in Scranton, PA; St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY; and St. Paul School in Cranston, RI; and Archbishop Neale School in La Plata, MD. She also taught at schools located in New York City, NY, and Lock Haven, PA.

From 1973 until the time of her death, Sister Anna Clare served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Sister Agnes Marie, IHM, Sister M. Virginia, IHM, and Teresa Munley; and three brothers, John Daniel, James Jr., and William Joseph.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, May 11 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
