Ambrosia McHale, IHM

Sister M. Ambrosia McHale, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, May 29, 1928, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Reading, PA, after being stricken ill while attending a conference in Reading.

She was born on December 5, 1868 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late James and Bridget Kelley McHale. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1891, received the religious habit on December 28, 1891, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1893.

Sister Ambrosia served as a teacher at St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Leo School in Ashley, PA; St. Alphonsus School in New York City, NY; and Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY.

From 1923 until the time of her death, Sister Ambrosia served as directress of Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John.

She is survived by two sisters, Sarah Bagley and Catherine Hines, both of Pittston, PA; and four nephews, John Bagley Jr., Walter Bagley, Aloysius Bagley and Ambrose Bagley, all of Pittston, PA.

The funeral will be Thursday, May 31, at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
