Sister M. Aloysia Schermanson, IHM

Sister M. Aloysia Schermanson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, January 12, 1978, at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on July 27, 1891 in Washington, DC, and given the name Sigrid. She was the daughter of the late Joel and Henrietta Kullberg Schermanson. She was a member of the class of 1910 of the IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID. She entered into the IHM Congregation on August 23, 1912, received the religious habit on August 2, 1913, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Aloysia served as a music and primary grade teacher at the following schools: St. Cecilia Acedmy in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Basil Academy in Dushore, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Spokane, WA; St. Lawrence Academy in Portland, OR; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID; and the IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID. In addition to teaching the 5th and 6th grades at St. Lawrence Academy in Portland, OR, she was also the principal from 1934 to 1946.

From 1971 until the time of her death, Sister Aloysia was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Monsignor Eric and Joseph; and two sisters, Esther and Agnes Schermanson.

She is survived by a brother, Henry of Coeur d’Alene, ID; two sisters, Maria Schermanson of Wallace, ID, and Sister M. Clement Schermanson, IHM, at the Marian Convent inScranton, PA.

The funeral will be Saturday, January 14, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Friday at the Marian Convent.
