Sister M. Alexis Hewitt, IHM

December 10, 1861 – July 3, 1940

Sister M. Alexis Hewitt, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, July 3, 1940, at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA.

She was born on December 10, 1831 in Wyoming, PA, and given the name Anna. She was the daughter of the late Bernard and Honora Barry Hewitt. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1889, received the religious habit on October 3, 1889, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1891.

Sister Alexius served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA; Holy Rosary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Bernard School in Hastings, PA; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. Paul School in Scranton, PA; and St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA.

From 1925 until the time of her death, Sister served in child care for resident children at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James, and two sisters, Mary and Helen.

She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Marion, IHM, stationed at St. John’s Convent in Susquehanna, PA, and two nephews, John Gibbons of New York, and Joseph Gibbons of Philadelphia, PA.

The funeral will be Saturday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Note: Mother’s first name could have also been Hannah.
