Loretta Chouinard, IHM

Sister Loretta Chouinard, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Euthalia) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on November 4, 1906, in Worcester, MA, and was the daughter of the late John (Jean) Baptiste and Helene Martle Chouinard. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 4, 1928, made temporary profession of her vows on April 14, 1931, and final profession of her vows on August 4, 1934.

Sister Loretta served as a teacher at the following schools: Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1931 to 1937; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1939 to 1948; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1957 to 1960; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1967 to 1968; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1976 to 1977; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; as well as at elementary schools located in Altoona and Pittsburgh, PA; and LaPlata and Baltimore, MD. She also served as a nursery school and kindergarten teacher at St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, PA, from 1948 to 1949.

Sister Loretta served as the postmistress at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1978 to 1987.

From 1987 until the time of her death, Sister Loretta served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Romeo A., Leo and John, and three sisters, Alice Mack, Antoinette Martin, and Corrinne Brown.

She is survived by a grandnephew, Kenneth Gengo of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

The funeral was Saturday, October 23, at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Friday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
