Sister Ann Ryan, IHM

Sister Ann Ryan, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Sebastian) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, October 14, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

Born on December 21, 1913, in Dunmore, PA, she was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Ellen “Nellie” E. McHale Ryan. Educated in the Dunmore Public Schools, she later received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bloomsburg University, and a Master of Arts degree from Marywood College. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1940, received the religious habit on August 2, 1940, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1942.

Sister Ann served as a teacher at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary Elementary and High Schools in Syracuse, NY; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary and High Schools in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Alphonsus High School in New York, NY; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Reverend Joseph and William.

She is survived by brother, Reverend John of Marquette, MI; and three sisters, Sister Mary, IHM, residing at Cathedral Convent in Scranton, PA, Sister M. Venard, residing at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, and Florence, of Clarks Summit, PA.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 18, at 4:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent. Friends may call Monday, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Marian Convent. Interment, Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. in the Ryan Family Plot at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
