Sister Gertrude Marie Jelley, IHM

Sister Gertrude Marie Jelley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, August 30, 1977, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, after an illness.
She was born on November 29, 1902 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Isadora (Dorothy). She was the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Katherine Callaghan Jelley. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1921, received the religious habit on December 27, 1921, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1923.
Sister Gertrude Marie taught in the following schools: St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1924 to 1926; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1926 to 1927; Mother of Mercy Elementary School in Washington, NC, from 1927 to 1945; and St. Paul School in Edgewood, RI, from 1961 to 1966.
Sister served as principal in the following schools: St. Agnes Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1945 to 1948; and St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1948 to 1949.
Sister Gertrude Marie also served as the Director of Postulants of the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1961.
From 1966 until the time of her death, Sister Gertrude Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Raphael (infant), Raphael J., John Raphael, Ferdinand Sylvester Jr., and George Kenneth; and a sister, Catherine E. Hill.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday, September 2, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday and Thursday at the Marian Convent.
