Sister Dorothy Welsh, IHM

Sister Dorothy Welsh, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Joseph Gabriel) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Thursday, March 9, 1989, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

Born on October 24, 1908, in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Margaret Jordan Welsh. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1927, received the religious habit on December 28, 1927, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.

Sister Dorothy served as a teacher at Mother of Mercy School in Washington, NC, for twenty years. She also served as a teacher at schools located in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Sister Dorothy served as principal at the following schools: St. Monica Elementary School in Raleigh, NC; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark’s Green, PA; and St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA.

Sister also served on the support staff at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1980 to 1988.

From 1988 until the time of her death, Sister Dorothy was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Arthur, and Joseph, and four sisters, Mary, Catherine, Theresa, and Margaret.

She is survived by a nephew, and cousins.

The funeral will be Monday, March 13, at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Sunday afternoon after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
