Sister Clare Marie McMenamin, IHM

April 15, 1904 – October 2, 1987

Sister Clare Marie McMenamin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Friday, October 2, 1987, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on April 15, 1904 in Freeland, PA, she was given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Margaret Ferry McMenamin. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1920, received the religious habit on December 28, 1920, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1922.

Sister Clare Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Scranton, PA, from 1922 to 1923; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, from 1923 to 1925; St. Leo School in Ashley, PA, from 1925 to 1926; Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School in New York City, NY from 1926 to 1928; St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA, from 1966 to 1975; Notre Dame School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1975 to 1978; and Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mt. Holly, NJ, from 1978 to 1986.

Sister served as principal and local superior at the following schools: St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1945 to 1951; Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School in New York City, NY; Immaculata High School in New York City, NY, from 1951 to 1957; and Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1963 to 1966. She also served as prefect of studies at South Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1957 to 1963.

From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Clare Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in English from Catholic University.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Reverend John Gerard, CP, Maurice, Hugh, Joseph, and Bernard, and three sisters, Mary, Sister Jean Marie, RSM, and Clare Stringer.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret McMenamin of Toms River, NJ, and Sister M. Susan, IHM, of Forest Hills, NY, a sister-in-law, Elizabeth McMenamin of Scranton, PA, and a niece, Margaret McMenamin.

The funeral will be Monday, October 5 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Sunday afternoon or evening.
