Sister Alphonsus Marie Downey, IHM

November 1, 1890 – February 15, 1948

Sister Alphonsus Marie Downey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, February 15, 1948, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

She was born on November 1, 1890 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Hortense. She was the daughter of the late James and Sarah Scanlon Downey. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1919, received the religious habit on December 27, 1919, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1921.

Sister Alphonsus Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Dominick School in Oyster Bay, NY; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; Sacred Heart School in New York, NY; and St. Alphonsus School in New York, NY.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis William (infant) and Willard G., and three sisters, Lucy Agnes Wallace, Catherine Wunsch and Sarah (Sallie) R. Downey.

She is survived by two brothers, James Daniel and Joseph Francis, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, February 18 at 8:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church in New York City, NY. Interment will be at a later date at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday at St. Alphonsus Convent, 14 Thompson Street, New York City, NY.
