Sister Alice Marie McCormick, IHM

Sister Alice Marie McCormick, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Edwardina) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on August 31, 1999, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on February 20, 1932 in Pittsburgh, PA, and given the name Mary Alice. She was the daughter of the late Elmer Edward and Marie Foley McCormick. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1950, made temporary profession of her vows on August 2, 1953, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1956.

Sister Alice Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1959 to 1967; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark’s Green, PA, from 1970 to 1975; St. Bernard Parochial School in Hastings, PA; and St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE. She also taught in elementary schools in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1967 to 1970; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1988 to 1991; and Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark’s Summit, PA, from 1991 to 1997.

From 1997 until the time of her death, Sister Alice Marie served as a teacher at Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA.

She earned Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education, and a Master of Arts degree in elementary education, both from Marywood College. She was a member of the National Catholic Education Association.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Sammon, and a brother, Robert.

She is survived by a brother, James of Wadsworth, OH, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, September 4, at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Friday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the IHM Center.
