Sister Marionette Coll Celebrates 104th Birthday

Our Sister Marionette Coll recently celebrated her 104th birthday.

The joyous sounds of celebration filled the halls of Our Lady of Peace Residence on November 17th, as Sisters, friends, and devoted OLP staff gathered to honor Sister Marionette’s remarkable 104th birthday. Born in 1921—a time when Warren G. Harding was president and the nation was navigating the Jazz Age—Sister Marionette has been a quiet, faithful observer of a century of unprecedented change. Her lifetime spans eras defined by monumental shifts in both global society and the sacred life of the Church. She has lived through the Great Depression, the entirety of World War II, the dawn of the Atomic Age, and the profound social reordering brought by the Civil Rights Movement. Within the Catholic Church, her experience bridges the gap between the strict, Latin-only Mass of her youth and the welcoming, vernacular liturgy of today; she witnessed firsthand the seismic transformations initiated by the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), observing the shift from traditional religious habits to modern dress and the dramatic reshaping of the roles of religious women. From the age of rotary phones and silent films to the ubiquitous presence of artificial intelligence and global digital communication, Sister Marionette’s 104 years stand as a testament not only to her enduring faith but to the relentless pace of history, which she has met with grace and steadfast devotion.

    Dear Sr. Marionette,
Wishing you the happiest of birthdays. It was my pleasure to have you as my senior year teacher. I think back to those happy years and all you taught us. At our last reunion, you said the Sisters prayed for us, that we’d love each other. I can tell you, your prayers have been answered. We are fewer, but still connected. Wishing you and the Sisters joyous holidays.

    Fondly, Josephine Affuso Zavolakis
