Joy in Sicuani on Pentecost

Fathers Mauricio Valdivia and Marcelo Valdivia, Sicuani Peru

Early in 2024, the church in Sicuani received a very special gift. Two brothers from Chile, both priests, Fathers Mauricio Valdivia and Marcelo Valdivia came to serve the people also bringing with them their wonderful gift of music. Father Marcelo celebrates Mass in the IHM Sisters’ parish of San Felipe each Saturday evening and movingly sings the words to the Consecration. He and his brother Mauricio, who is the pastor in one of the mountain parishes, often sing together at special masses or at youth gatherings.

Father Marcelo shared with me that celebrating Pentecost was a big day in Chile. So they both planned a concert here in Sicuani and got together with Father Oliver Muñoz who is in charge of vocations to include a theme of religious vocations with the concert. Father Oliver and two newly ordained priests, all with their guitars, joined the two Chileans. There is a very large courtyard in front of the old mission church where the event was held. Each of the 12 religious communities were invited to present information on their respective congregations. Displays were available for the concert goers and for the sisters to talk with the visitors.

Many of the songs focused on the Holy Spirit and included actions and participation by all present. One sister from a Brazilian community played her guitar and joined in the
singing and dancing around the courtyard.

Woven throughout the music were opportunities for each community of sisters to share about their community charism and ministry. Many parents were present and youth groups were asked to dance and sing.

It was a great day filled with joy for everyone!
