A Surprise Gift to the Archives

The donor possessed this piece of burnt wood since February 1971 when the Motherhouse burned.

February 21, 2024 marked the 53rd anniversary of the fire that destroyed the IHM Motherhouse. Recently the Archives received a donated item from the Marywood’s Office of University Advancement which had been gifted to them in 2023 by an anonymous donor. The donor possessed this piece of burnt wood since February 1971 when the Motherhouse burned. Our investigation has revealed that this structure is one of the many cornices which adorned the fourth floor roof around most of the building. How carefully was our Motherhouse building constructed! How cherished is this precious burnt cornice which represents the care and strength of the spirit within the Motherhouse?
