Sister Zita Maria Kane, IHM

Sister Zita Maria Kane, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, December 14, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on September 6, 1908 in Sugar Notch, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Rita. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Bridget McGlynn Kane. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1926, made temporary profession of her vows on January 2, 1929 and final profession of her vows on August 15, 1932.
Sister Zita Maria served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1929 to 1930; South Scranton Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1947 to 1956; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1956 to 1966; Bishop Hannan High School in Scranton, PA, from 1966 to 1977; and St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as in schools in Altoona, PA; Portland, OR; Forest Hills, NY.
Sister Zita Maria also served as the IHM Congregation historian from 1977 to 1986, and wrote several accounts of the history of the IHM Sisters, as well as the history of some of the secondary schools in the Diocese of Scranton.
From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Zita Maria served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in history from Villanova University. She had been a member of the Pennsylvania Council for Social Studies and the Social Studies Council of Northeast Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jule T. Buonasera and Zita Marie Sagan, a brother, Joseph G., and an aunt in community, Sister M. Zita McGlynn, IHM.
She is survived by a brother, John D. Kane, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, December 18 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
