Sister Miriam Therese Rihn, IHM

Sister Miriam Therese Rihn, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Sunday, June 11, 1989, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on June 9, 1903 in Pittsburgh, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Maurice William and Margaret Welsh Rihn. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1924, received the religious habit on December 29, 1924, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1926.

Sister Miriam Therese was an accomplished musician, and served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Ann School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Patrick School in Olyphant, PA; West Central Catholic High School in Kingston, PA; St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD; St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY; and Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY. She also taught at schools located in Altoona, PA. In 1963, Sister returned to St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, where she taught social studies and gave piano lessons until 1985.

From 1985 until the time of her death, Sister Miriam Therese served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in music from Columbia University.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice William, Jr.

She is survived by three sisters, Catherine A. Rihn, Margaret Rihn, and Sister M. Laurencia (Pauline) Rihn, RSM, all of Pittsburgh, PA; nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, June 15, at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
