Sister Mary Thomas McAndrew, IHM

April 5, 1875 – February 19, 1953

Sister Mary Thomas McAndrew, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 19, 1953 in St Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, in her 60th year of profession.

She was born on April 5, 1875 in Hawley, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine O’Boyle McAndrew. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1892, received the religious habit on April 3, 1893, and made profession of her vows on July 1, 1895.

Sister Mary Thomas served as a music teacher and superior at the following schools: St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Aliquippa, PA; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA; St. Lawrence Elementary School in Portland, OR; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; as well as at elemenary schools located in Lock Haven and Pittsburgh, PA.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Thomas.

She is survived by sister, Catherine Finnegan of Scranton, PA; a brother, James J. of San Antonio, TX; nephews and nieces, including our Sr M. Bernardina, IHM, who is the dean of students at Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 21 from St. Agnes’ Place in Elmhurst, PA with interment at St Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call Friday afternoon or evening at St. Agnes’ Place.
