Sister Mary Robert Gerrity, IHM

May 19, 1879 – March 23, 1967

Sister Mary Robert Gerrity, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, March 23, 1967, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on May 19, 1879 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Hannah Jane. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna Jane Walton Gerrity. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1906, received the religious habit on July 26, 1906, and made profession of her vows on July 16, 1908.

Sister Mary Robert served as a teacher at the following schools: Immaculate Conception School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1908 to 1910; All Saints School in Masontown, PA, from 1913 to 1921; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA, from 1921 to 1924; St. Rosalia School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1924 to 1926; and St. Mary’s Home in Cresson, PA, from 1926 to 1963.

She served in child care for resident children at St. John’s Home in Cresson, PA, from 1910 to 1913.

From 1963 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Robert served as a prayer minster at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, twin baby girls, Josephine Gerrity, Ellen Gerrity, Viana Gerrity and Mary Ann Flaherty, and three brothers, Thomas, Robert, and Anthony J. Jr.

She is survived by five sisters, Frances Marks, Charlotte Devine and Elizabeth Gerrity, all of Scranton, PA, Bridget McGowan of New York City, NY, and Agnes Sullivan of Cleveland, OH; several nieces and nephews, including Reverend Robert Walton of Peru. She is also survived by several cousins, including Reverend Charles Flaherty of Olmsteadville, NY.

The funeral will be Monday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Sunday at the Marian Convent.


As per Mr. Anthony Gerrity’s obituary, published right after his death in 1926:

…”Mr. Gerrity is survived by his wife and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Joseph Flaherty, of Hoboken, NJ; Mrs. Andrew Sullivan of this city (Scranton); Sister Mary Robert, of the Immaculate Heart Order, Cresson, PA; Mrs. Carl Marcks, Mrs. Thomas (Charlotte) Devine, Elizabeth and Ella Gerrity, all of this city (Scranton); Jett Gerrity of Scranton; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Adney, of Richland Center, Wis., and Mrs. Bridget Ruane, of Scranton. Fourteen grandchildren also survive.”…
