Sister Mary Luke O’Brien

Sister Mary Luke O’Brien, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, September 14, 1899, at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on September 17, 1868 in Avoca, PA, and given the name Mary (Mame). She was the daughter of Luke and Mary Saunders O’Brien. Before entering the community, Mary was a teacher in the Avoca public schools. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 30, 1894, received the religious habit on January 24, 1895, and made profession of her vows on February 2, 1897.
Sister Mary Luke served as a teacher at St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard.
In addition to her parents, Luke and Mary of Avoca, she is also survived by five brothers, Thomas, Patrick, Michael, Luke Jr. and James; a sister, Bridget Hartnell; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, September 16, at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale, PA. Interment will follow at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Carbondale. A requiem mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 20, at 8:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Avoca, PA.
