Sister Mary Laurana Burns, IHM

Sister Mary Laurana Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Friday, October 23, 1992, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on August 9, 1908 in Plains, PA, and given the name Helen. She was the daughter of the late James B. and Mary Ann Garrahan Burns. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 2, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.
Sister Laurana served as a teacher of primary and intermediate grade levels at the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in WIlliamsport, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY; as well as schools located in New Bern, NC, and Lock Haven, PA.
Sister also served on the support staff of the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.
From 1985 until the time of her death, Sister Laurana served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She is preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas A., James Patrick and Joseph Patrick.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday, October 27 with Mass of Christian Burial at 7:30 p.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be held on Wednesday morning at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday afternoon after 2 p.m.
