Sister Mary James Johnson, IHM

August 25, 1896 – May 26, 1978

Sister Mary James Johnson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, May 26, 1978 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on August 25, 1896 in Washburn, Wisconsin, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late James and Anna Furlette Johnson. She was a graduate of the IHM Academy in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, class of 1916. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1922, received the religious habit on December 28, 1922, and made final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister Mary James served as a junior high and high school teacher in the following schools: St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Michael’s Industrial School in Hoban Heights, PA; St. Rosalia School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Lawrence Parish School in Portland, OR; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA; and St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA.

Sister also served as the principal and superior of St. Michael’s Industrial School in Hoban Heights, PA.

From 1970 until the time of her death, Sister Mary James served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by a two brothers, William and Alexander, and a sister, Myra.

She is survived by two sisters, Miss Elizabeth Johnson of Seattle, WA, and Aurelia Winkler of Woodburn, OR, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
