Sister Mary Ellen Farrell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, July 3, 1971, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was born on January 24, 1882 in Honesdale, PA, and given the name Loretta. She was the daugther of the late James and Mary Byrne Farrell. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1920, received the religious habit on December 28, 1920, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1922.
Sister Mary Ellen served as a teacher in the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Peter Cathedral School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Jr., Bernard (Barney), Edward and Francis J.; and four sisters, Mary Mangan, Nora Hogan, Agnes Ardath Farrell, and Theresa Veronica O’Neil.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including May Keenan of Uniondale, PA.
The funeral will be Tuesday, July 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday after 4:00 pm and all day on Monday.
