Sister M. Borgia Boylan, IHM

October 8, 1859 – January 14, 1949

Sister M. Borgia Boylan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, January 14, 1949, at St. Rose Convent in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on October 8, 1859 in Reading, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Owen and Margaret Riley Boylan. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 15, 1879, received the religious habit on June 2, 1880, and made profession of her vows on April 12, 1882.

Sister Borgia served as a teacher at St. Joseph High School in Williamsport, PA, and St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA. She served as principal and superior at St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA.

Sister also served as bursar for the IHM Congregation from 1919 to 1925, and superintendent of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

From 1939 until the time of her death, Sister Borgia served as a prayer minister at St. Rose Convent in Carbondale, PA.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Boylan Brophy.

She is survived by a niece, Margaret Ott; two nephews, Michael Brophy, and Thomas Brophy; and two grandnieces.

The funeral will be on Monday, January 17 at St. Rose Church, Carbondale, PA. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Carbondale. Friends may call on Sunday afternoon at St. Rose Convent.
