Sister M. Cephas McHugh, IHM

February 10, 1871 – December 12, 1948

Sister M. Cephas McHugh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, December 12, 1948, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on February 10, 1871 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary E. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Bridget Joyce McHugh. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1905, received the religious habit on December 28, 1905, and made profession of her vows on July 16, 1908.

Sister Cephas served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Alphonsus School in New York, NY; St. Basil School in Dushore, PA; and St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA.

Sister served as superior at St. Joseph’s Shelter in Scranton, PA, for 10 years; and in child care for resident children at the St. Joseph’s Foundling Home in Scranton, PA.

From 1947 until the time of her death, Sister Cephas was engaged in the ministry of prayer at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Patrick, Michael Joseph, John J., Reverend Peter, Thomas and Reverend Bonaventure, C.P.; and two sisters, Beatrice McHugh and Katie McHugh.

She is survived by a brother, Edward of Scranton, PA; and several nieces and nephews, including Reverend Frank McHugh, pastor of Church of the Annunciation in Williamsport, PA; Reverend Joseph McHugh, pastor of St. Thomas Church in Dickson City, PA; Mother M. Wencelaus McHugh, IHM, of Forest Hills, NY; and Sister M. Kenneth McHugh, IHM, of Edgewood, RI.

The funeral will be Tuesday, December 14, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
