Sister Mary Alberta Lea, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, January 12, 1893, at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on December 25, 1865 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Elizabeth (Lizzie). She was the daughter of the late James and Ann Fitzpatrick Lea. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 15, 1884, received the religious habit on April 6, 1885, and made profession of her vows on December 21, 1886.
Sister Mary Alberta served as teacher at St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA, and St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA.
From 1892 until the time of her death, Sister was a prayer minister at St. Rose Convent in Carbondale.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose’s Church, Carbondale, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Carbondale.
“CARBONDALE, Jan. 12 – Sister Mary Alberta died this morning at St. Rose’s Convent. Deceased was a sufferer from pulmonary trouble for over a year, but still her death was unexpected. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Lee (sic), and was known in the world as Miss Lizzie Lee. She was born December 25, 1865, and entered the convent July 15, 1884, and received the first habit of religion in April 6, 1885, and took the final vows on May 21, 1886, in the convent of St. Rose as a sister of the Immaculate Heart. She then was assigned to teach in St. John’s parochial school, Pittston, and afterwards in the parochial school at Hyde Park. About a year ago she had to give up teaching an account of ill health and remained at St. Rose’s convent. She was well known in the community and was a favoite with all who came in contact with her. She was well educated and was possessed of a bright, cheerful disposition. The funeral will take place in St. Rose’s church, at 9:30 o’clock. Interment will be made in the sister’s St. Rose’s cemetery.”
