Maria Jeanne Guenter, IHM

Sister Maria Jeanne Guenter, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, July 21, 1988, at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA, after an illness.

She was born on March 16, 1908 in New York City, NY, and given the name Helen. She was the daughter of the late John and Maria Troester Guenter. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1927, received the religious habit on December 28, 1927, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.

Sister Maria Jeanne served as a principal and junior high teacher at the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC; St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD; and St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY.

Sister served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Peter School in Poughkeepsie, NY; St. Raymond School in East Rockaway, NY; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; and St. Mary School in Manhasset, NY. She also taught at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, and Forest Hills, NY.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and an Master of Science degree in education from Duquesne University. She did futher studies at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret (toddler), Elizabeth Barbara Guenter, and Sister Margaret Marie Guenter, IHM.

She is survived by cousins, including Margaret Smith of Union, NJ.

The funeral will be Monday, July 25 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday afternoon or evening.
