Maria Carmel Hanlon, IHM

Sister Maria Carmel Hanlon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday, May 11, 1993, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on May 23, 1904 in Olyphant, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Jane Lally Hanlon. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.

As a teacher of intermediate and junior high classes, Sister Maria Carmel served at the following local schools: St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA. She also served as teacher at schools located in New York and New Jersey.

From 1971 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Carmel served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Bartholomew, Thomas V. and James R., and three sisters, Rose E. Goucher, Genevieve R. Marcoux and Sarah (Sadie) Folks.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral will be Thursday, May 13 with Mass of Christian Burial at 7:30 p.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday afternoon after 2:00 p.m.
