Sister M. Xaveria Smith, IHM

Sister M. Xaveria Smith, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, August 30, 1969, at Danville State Hospital in Danville, PA.

She was born on March 7, 1892, in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Loretta. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Anna L. Healy Smith. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 19, 1911, received the religious habit on December 27, 1911, and made profession of her vows on December 30, 1913.

Sister Xaveria served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick School in White Haven, PA, and St. Rosalia School in Pittsburgh, PA. She also served in child care for resident children at St. John’s Orphan Home in Cresson, PA, and St. Joseph’s Shelter in Scranton, PA.

At the time of her death, Sister Xaveria was a prayer minister at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph.

She is survived by a sister, Mildred A. Ingoldsby of Carbondale, PA, a nephew and two nieces.

The funeral will be Tuesday, September 2, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
