Sister M. Walburga McCaffrey, IHM

August 30, 1877 – January 2, 1957

Sister M. Walburga McCaffrey, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, January 2, 1957, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on August 30, 1877 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Catherine. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Margaret Havey McCaffrey, She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1904, received the religious habit on December 8, 1904, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1906.

Sister Walburga served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; St. Michael’s Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA; Sacred Heart of Mary School in Jermyn, PA: and St. John the Evangelist School in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Patrick and Joseph.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Boyce of Scranton, PA; a brother, Francis of Scranton, PA; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral will be Friday, January 4, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, Scranton. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Marian Convent.


Archival Reflection:

In God’s holy Providence, Sister M. Walburga was called on to suffer several years of disability, which she bore patiently. Her great faith was plainly manifest in her last hours, as she calmly told the Chaplain that was dying. In full consciousness and with deep fervor, she prayerfully received the last holy rites.
