Sister M. Visitation Bergan, IHM

December 1, 1868 – May 3, 1906

Sister M. Visitation Bergan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, May 3, 1906, at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Scranton, PA.

She was born on December 1, 1868, in Waymart, PA, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of Mary Farley Bergan and the late Patrick Bergan. Before entering the community, Elizabeth was a teacher in the Mayfield public schools. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1893, received the religious habit on May 24, 1894, and made profession of her vows on July 2, 1896.

Sister Visitation served as a teacher at St. Paul School in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Thomas, Andrew, and Gerald; and two sisters, Anna and Nellie Bergan.

In addition to her mother, Mary Bergan of Mayfield, PA, she is also survived by three brothers, Patrick H. Bergan, Jr. of Huntington, PA, Kieran of Fairmount, WV, and John of Mayfield, PA; and a sister, Mary Bergan of Mayfield, PA.

The funeral will be on Saturday, May 5, at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, followed by interment in the Marywood College Cemetery, on the grounds of Marywood College in Scranton, PA.
